English Language Learning (ELL) Courses
This is an accordion element with a series of buttons that open and close related content panels.
ELL Overview
Workplace English Language Learning (ELL) classes are taught in the workplace during work time. The goal of Workplace English instruction is to support the listening, speaking, reading and writing skills improvement of employees so they may perform with greater success on the job and feel more confident and comfortable in their work and daily lives. These skills foster effective communication between employees and supervisors.
ELL instructional services are provided by Brenda Ferreira and Jennifer Sell, ELL Training Officers with Cultural Linguistic Services in the Office of Human Resource Development. Areas of instruction include speaking, listening, reading, writing, grammar and pronunciation.
Workplace English courses are customized to meet the needs and interests of individual department managers and employees. When possible, ELL Training Officers conduct job task analyses to determine the specific language needed to succeed in a given job. This can include job shadowing, vocabulary inventories and collection of photos and written materials used on the job (manuals, job descriptions, safety notices, and memos).
The six general categories for English language training include:
- Social Interactions
- Workplace Interactionsimage student studying
- Talking about Work
- Workplace Safety
- Human Resources Topics
- Workplace Culture Topics
Who Participates?
The ELL classes are designed for FP&M Physical Plant custodial employees who have limited English proficiency and who have passed probation. These one-hour ELL classes are held twice per week on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The number of participants ranges from 20-25 per class.
The ‘2-employees-per-crew-per-class’ Rule: Physical Plant custodians clean over 200 campus buildings everyday. In order to balance ELL classes and daily custodial operations, no more than two employees are gone from each crew simultaneously.
Employees in English Proficient (EP) positions are not eligible to attend these classes during work time.
Employee Learning Center
Cultural Linguistic Services also offers other learning opportunities open to all employees of UW-Madison. Available services include the Employee Learning Center, a drop-in learning lab where employees can work on individual learning goals:
- Reading Writing Skills
- Computer Skills
- Citizenship Exam Preparation
- Basic Math Skills
- GED/HSED (High School Diploma) Support
- English Listening Comprehension, Pronunciation and Conversation Skills

Aspiring Supervisor Training
This FREE 7-session series is designed for employees who direct the work of others (without supervisor title) or supervise student employees. The series is also great for people who would like skills to prepare for a supervisory position. If you are not ready to commit to a 7-session series, start small. Take our “FP&M Proactive Communication (1) and (2).”
- Participants practice interpersonal communication and coaching skills in bringing employee engagement and inclusion into daily operations.
- These are important skills that support one of FP&M’s core values to be ‘people-centered.’
- Series led by Shoko Miyagi, Training Officer for Facilities Planning & Management. Shoko had co-facilitated this series for 7 years with Mary Hoddy, now emeritus Staff Education Director from Wisconsin Union. The series was previously called “Sometimes & Aspiring Supervisor Series (SASS)” and was offered through Office of Human Resource Development.
Is the series a good fit for me?
Please consider the following characteristics of our class and decide if you like to learn this way.
- I like to read short articles and apply what I learned to my work. (This is a good fit. We have short articles between each class.)
- I like to proactively find ways to fix problems in the workplace rather than complain about them. (This is a good fit. Each week you will apply something you learned to your workplace.)
- I like to check my emails during meetings and workshops. (This might NOT be a good fit for you. You might prefer to read a book about supervision or take free online courses through OHRD.)
- I like to discuss different options for how to resolve issues in my workplace. (This is a good fit. We don’t provide answers but we’ll provide you with ideas to try.)
- I am willing to practice skills such as asking open-ended questions in class. (This is a good fit for you. Every week we practice new skills during class.)

Space is limited. If you are interested, select the appropriate date and fill out an FP&M Request Form.
