As scientists learn more about COVID-19 and its variants, mask guidance has evolved. To help you make sense of it all, here’s a quick rundown of masking at UW-Madison. Don’t forget, we all have to wear masks indoors!
- Campus has extended its masking policy to at least March 1. All individuals, regardless of vaccination status, must wear an acceptable face covering properly fitted to cover the wearer’s nose and mouth at all times in UW-Madison indoor public spaces.
- Employees who are public-facing can choose to wear an N95/KN95 respirator provided by at no cost to employees by campus. Please work with your supervisor to acquire these masks. (A normal supply is 1-2 masks/person/week.)
- Employees who are not public-facing can choose to wear a surgical/procedure mask provided at no cost to employees by campus. Please work with your supervisor to acquire these masks. (A normal supply is 2/person/day). Mask fitters can also be ordered for free.
- Employees who must wear a mask for their job (e.g., a researcher working with hazardous substances) order specific masks from ShopUW+ and are fit-tested for those masks. Most employees do not fall into this category.
Supervisors: Please work with your directors to batch your orders by department or unit to avoid one-off/small orders being placed. Orders should be for 2-3 weeks’ supply. If you are ordering for your department and have questions, please contact Jessica Cebula.
Directors ordering masks: Please always check the instructions on ShopUW+ before ordering to confirm which masks are available at no cost. With high demand across campus, item styles and numbers are likely to change.
