James Harrod has been named FP&M’s new Director of Operations and Maintenance, effective Feb. 24. Jim Bogan, Assistant Vice Chancellor of Physical Plant, announced the hire, noting that it wasn’t just James’ strong resume that made him the ideal fit.
“During the selection process, James’ extensive experience in facilities management demonstrated his readiness for this role, but it was his ability to personally connect with people, foster collaboration, and demonstrate strong leadership that truly set him apart,” Jim said.
As the Director of Operations and Maintenance, he will oversee the team responsible for maintaining and improving the physical infrastructure on campus, ensuring safe, efficient, and reliable operations that align with the institution’s goals. Key responsibilities include managing budgets, supervising staff, coordinating with contractors, and implementing effective maintenance and asset management strategies.
James steps into a role previously held by Craig Mayer, who retired from FP&M in August 2024. Jim also thanked Silvie Marlette for stepping in to serve as interim director following Craig’s retirement.
“We are deeply appreciative of Silvie’s leadership during this transition period,” Jim said. “ She demonstrated remarkable dedication, adaptability, and a steady hand in preparing the team for a seamless transition as James takes on the role.
With more than 15 years of professional experience in facilities management, James most recently served as the Director of Maintenance and Engineering Services for UW Health. Before that, he started his career at FP&M as a Program and Policy Analyst and Project Manager within Physical Plant.
A UW alumnus, James is thrilled to return to campus and FP&M.
“I am excited to rejoin Physical Plant and look forward to meeting the talented team members that support UW-Madison’s mission,” James said.
